One of the most important names of our country in finishing machinery, Lafer Turk’ s Chairman of the Board Tamer Hasbay stated that the attendance to ITM 2009 was pretty high. Answering our questions in spite of his busy fair agenda, Mr. Hasbay is quite hopeful about the future of the sector. What are your evaluations about the fair?
The visitor mass is more than the expected in ITM 2009. In these hard times, you have to be brave to organize a fair. Eventually, ITM 2009 is a fair in accordance with its meaning and spirit. When we look in a general perspective, we see it is a good activity. Everyone were in the opinion that attendance to the fair would be low because of negative effects of global crisis on textile industry. But it turned out so different when we examined visitors. The fair is visited mainly by professionals of the industry. |

Also there is pretty high attendance from neighbour countries, but I had expected higher attandance from countries such as India, China, Bangladesh.
How do you comment about finising
sector’ s relation with fashion?
Finishing, is the last phase of fabric processing. Processes of finishing change
as long as fashion changes. They are interrelated directly. Finishing is more changeable than other sectors of textile. We know that niche products are produced in Turkey rather than unit products. In this respect, finishing sector has a clear future. Today, finishing sector still keeps its dynamism in Italy. There are some Turkish companies which produce their goods here and send them to Italy for finishing. If you are a leader country in the fashion, this is reflected automatically by finishing sector.

We see that the negative atmosphere arisen from global crisis have cleared up in ITM 2009. What are your
opinions about that? In textile, there are some bumpy roads. But this does not mean the textile industry is finished in Turkey. It is certain there will be a radical change. At this point we will use the advantages of being close to Europe or to the biggest consumption centers. As Turkey, we have the capacity to produce more different, higher value added and more fashionable products in shorter time and with more quality. I believe we will be advantageous in this sector. If textile sector exists in a country then machinery sector will keep existing in that country. Today, the biggest problem of machine manufacturers in Europe is that they do not have the chance to develop their machines in their own countries any more. European machine manufacturers used to exhibit their new technologies in ITMA fairs which was held every four years.
But we could not see so many new technologies in the last two ITMA fairs. And the reason of this is because the route of textile is going toward to Turkey, Asia and the Middle East. Textile machinery is a sector developing together with textile industry in Turkey. But we have such a deficiency: Viewpoint about textile machinery industrialists in Turkey must be changed. Some important projects must be carried out. If the cooperation that can be done by our textile industrialists, textile machinery manufacturers and universities together is supported by institutions such as TUBITAK (Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) and KOSGEB (Small and Medium Industry Development Organization), much more successful and new products will be produced also in Turkey. |
